As part of eThekwini’s SMME Development programmes the city of Durban has supported local clothing designers, developing skills and affording them opportunities to have their collections seen on the world’s most prestigious catwalks, and these stylish young protege’s are certainly turning heads in the fashion world.
The boost the SMME programme brings to the fashion industry has seen the establishment of the Durban Fashion Fair, whilst the ‘Durban Fashion Fair Emporium‘ outlets at Umlazi’s MegaCity and Shongweni Market, the Fifth Store at Glenwood Village and independent Fashion houses such as Indoni Fashion House enables local fashionistas to support this local talent and proudly wear Durban-made, African-enthused designs.
Over 324 local designers have benefitted from the mentorship and industry support structures provided by the Durban Fashion Fair since it began in 2009. “It started as part of the Durban Business Fair, a city conference and exhibition programme,” explained Deputy Head of SMME Development, Nonku Mthembu. “And fashion became so big within that programme that we needed to create a seperate programme that focuses on developing fashion designers”.
Thanks to the support of the Durban Fashion Fair and eThekwini’s SMME Development opportunities many Durban fashion designers have graced international and local catwalks and regularly receive a rousing welcome for their unique collections.
Founder of Indoni Fashion House Zama Kwenzi Nkomo, is just one designer who literally sews culture into her work. Colourful patterns, beadwork and flowing, bold silouettes are the signature of Indoni fashion that makes it stand out from the crowd.
Zama showcased her work in Milan and took part in the Torino Fashion week, and has received many prestigious accolades, including Durban Designer of the Year.
As the world looks to Africa for fashion inspiration, Durban Designers are more than ready to strut their stuff.
