Jose Masango is the twenty fourth artist who’s work will be featured on the Woza Moya Artists Wall for the month of September.
Jose Masango, Jose was born in Kwa Mashu Township on the 10 of February 2002. Jose is self-taught but has attended art workshops at the Phansi museum. Although he has a few workshops he is relatively self-taught. He was inspired to take up art by watching his brother and a good friend, who made art with commitment and passion, they started off drawing Dragon Z Ball characters and then later developed into drawing hyper realistic drawings. He is fascinated by images that have a story to tell and how to share that story through his own unique vision. Jose was working as a driver during the day with Mr Price and painting in his spare time.
Jose Masango’s painting My Traditional identity – The inspiration came to him to show unity through diversity, Jose says he is half Tshonga and half Zulu, and he wanted to show the beauty of each culture and show that even though we are different we are united. Jose is inspired by the beauty of traditions and how traditional attire is worn with pride. Jose loves colour and this painting is a celebration of colour and pattern.
The concept behind the Woza Moya Artist’s Wall and Artist’s Cards is to create and showcase work for artists who have been hard hit by Covid. Each month a different Artist is paid to paint a 1,2m x 1,2m wall panel which is displayed on the wall outside our Woza Moya, Hillcrest AIDS Centre shop. Woza Moya assists the artist by marketing their work for the entire month their work is on display. A greeting card is made of the painted wall panel and sold in our shops so that artists can earn an ongoing passive income. This has worked well with artists earning from R200 to R1000 a month from the sale of the cards.
The painting is for sale and people can bid for the painting, bidding starts at R2000 at the start of each month, bidding will close at the end of the month and the person who has the highest bid gets to purchase the painting, the artist will get a further percentage of the sale. To assist the artist we have reproduced the artwork on a gift card and the artist gets 50% from the sale of his or her cards. If you love the artist’s work please support them by buying a card they are only R25, and card sales help artists earn a passive income, we now have over 24 beautiful cards to choose from.
The Woza Moya Artists wall, would like to thank the 100% Foundation for coming on board for an ongoing sponsorship and making this monthly event possible.
