The inaugural TIA360 eThekwini Tourism Investment Symposium, which recently took place at the Durban ICC and online, has thrown a lifeline to distressed tourism businesses in South Africa, while also assisting viable tourism projects in Durban.
All tourism businesses have been invited to be a part of an investment Project Book with exposure to local and international investors. This includes being showcased on a global electronic investment platform with over six million business subscribers.
TIA360, LeadHR and Productivity SA has also launched a Business Turnaround & Recovery (BT&R) programme to assist tourism businesses in difficulty. The eThekwini Municipality’s Invest Durban is calling all tourism businesses and project owners in Durban to be included in this expanding set of support measures available.
These announcements were made at the closure of the symposium, along with calls to stabilise and improve the local business and investment environment in Durban.
The primary aim of the conference was to support and attract investment to Kwa-Zulu Natal’s tourism industry by identifying key tourism support measures, expert thought leadership inputs, and projects or programmes for potential investors as well as existing stakeholders.
Said TIA360 CEO Sindile Xulu: ”The symposium was a great success and met all our expectations and objectives.
“We were delighted to have a number of high calibre speakers and panelists on the programme, many of whom presented invaluable concepts, proposals and ideas that can now be taken forward and implemented. Most importantly we are thrilled to announce a number of additional tangible programmes that will assist businesses in need.”
Russell Curtis, Head of Invest Durban and Durban Chamber Board Member, closed the symposium by announcing the Project Book and high-value distressed asset platform. Curtis also gave practical recommendations as to how leadership can stabilise and improve the local investment climate.
“The Project Book will have multiple phases and is available for business leaders to submit tourism investment projects for investors to support,” he said.
Some of the world’s top tourism experts were among the speakers at the event in six panel discussion sessions and an opening and closing plenary. Over 220 unique viewers attended the symposium online which garnered attention and coverag from local and international media.
The programme included panel discussions in key topics such as Community Tourism; Eventing4Tourism; AgriTourism (tourism on farms); Education4Tourism (the skills and standards required); Tech4Tourism (bringing new opportunities) and Finance4Tourism (innovative funding solutions and investment strategies).
