In the Ladies Race, having won the last three editions between them, it was no surprise that a tight race was going to take place between South Africa’s Gerda Steyn and Russia’s Alexander Morozova (the 2022 Champion). Steyn dominate the up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in the women’s race, pulling away from the lead pack of three women athletes at the first major checkpoint in Pinetown to build an insurmountable lead as she made her way along the 80km route with only the clock to beat. And beat it she did with a convincing new pace record and a new race record to add to her first place finish.  Steyn now holds the ‘up’ and ‘down’ records, trailing only seven-time winner Elena Nurgalieva in the number of women’s titles won. The 34-year-old South African now holds the ‘up’ and ‘down’ record, and has her eye’s set on catching the only seven-time winner of Comrades Ladies race, Elena Nurgalieva, famed in Comrades history for the number of women’s titles she won.

Flying Dutchman Piet Wiersma emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle against his rivals, showing that his 2-month Ethiopean training regime prepared him well for the hills renowned in the Comrades up run, all of which he took in his stride to reach Pietermaritzburg first, just missed out on breaking the 16-year-old course record by 21 seconds.
