uMkhosi Womhlanga 2018, the traditional Zulu Reed Dance Ceremony were thousands of maidens
present themselves to the Zulu Monarch, is set to take place at the eNyokeni Palace kwaNongoma from the 6th of September to the 9th.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture plans for thousands of Zulu maidens from all over Durban and KwaZulu Natal’s districts, Swaziland, Mpumalanga and Gauteng, who will gather to participate in this annual event.
The event, a traditional spectacle of massive proportions, is an important ‘right of passage’ for the girls who take part, and, an opportunity for the Zulu King to address the young Zulu maidens.

The Department, along with various stakeholders, uses the event to educate young girls of the careers available to them as well as to discuss the prevalent socials ills affecting the youth.
Non-schooling maidens will present their reeds to Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini on the 7th and the rest of the girls on the following day. He will deliver his main address on Saturday the 8th.

Umkhosi Womhlanga will be preceded by Umkhosi Womhlanga WaseNgwavuma on the 1st and 2nd of
September, where His Majesty will accept reeds from maidens in that area.
