Woza Moya Artist wall showcases local artists

Sibusiso Maphumulo, the carver of angels, will be featured for the month of July on Woza Moya’s Artists Wall developed to showcase the work of local artists.
The concept behind the Woza Moya Artist’s Wall and Artist’s Cards is to create a platform from which local Hillcrest artists, many of whom have been hit hard by Covid, can be supported and have their work not just seen, but also bid on as an online auction and developed into greeting cards.

Each month a different Artist is paid to paint a 1,2m x 1,2m wall panel which is displayed on the wall outside our Woza Moya, Hillcrest AIDS Centre shop. Woza Moya assists the artist by marketing their work for the entire month their work is on display. A greeting card is made of the painted wall panel and sold in our shops so that artists can earn an ongoing passive income.

Sibusiso Maphumulo Sibusiso lives in Thandanani in Verulam. He started carving at a very young age, and was self-taught, he comes from a family of carvers, his father and grandfather were both carvers, a fact he only learnt late in life when he was already carving, as his family died when he was very young.
Sibusiso is known as the carver of angels and many of them are quite humorous as they wear sunglasses. His first angel was based on himself and later he had visions and dreams at night at what he should carve. He often wakes up at night to draw his visions and sometimes seeing a piece of wood dictates what he should carve. He is a very spiritual person who is passionate about carving. Sibusiso travelled overseas with the Bat centre promoting his work. His work is collected by most galleries and private collection around the world.

The painting is for sale and people can bid for the painting, bidding starts at R1500 at the start of each month, bidding will close at the end of the month and the person who has the highest bid gets to purchase the painting, the artist will get a further percentage of the sale. To assist the artist we have reproduced the artwork on a gift card and the artist gets 50 % from the sale of his or her cards.

Cards can be purchased at Woza Moya at only R25.
